Many and wonderful are the ways of DUKWs. SInce the plastic washers
that seals at the air hub tends to leak (when new till it beds in, and
when old till you turn it round, then discover that someone has done it
before) It is standard practice to install tyre valves in each valve
stem where they exit the wheel. Valve cores and a fitting tool were
carried as part of the operational spares, and of course, the spare was
kept with a valve in it till needed.

Just part of the joys of DUKWdom, dont throw away hub air hoses
eitheras they can be difficult to get and you may need to re-use the
ends or convert to modern stuff. Failing that many owners just pull
all the tyre inflation kit and dump it in a box in case anyone ever
needs it. Two other bits of tyre inflation stuff;

1. CHECK THE OIL LEVEL IN THE COMPRESSOR (very small dipstick on the
side of the base) it runs all the time the engine does, and in can be
ruined quite quickly by running dry. Also check the core plug on the
compressor water jacket for leaks, if you cant get a replacement it
has been known for people to peen a coin in place. If the compressor
is down for any reason disconnect it at the front of the crank rather
than run it attached and suffering.

2. CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE SAFETY VALVE ON THE COMPRESSOR AIR TANK
BELOW THE PASSENGERS FEET. This was factory set to 100 PSIG (I think)
but the British Army re-set them to 50 PSIG after all how hard do you
want your tyres? If the tank looks rusty, or the drain valve wont
work, or the safety valve wont operate PULL THE TANK BEFORE RUNNING THE
ENGINE. You can do without it rather than using it if it us unsafe.
Ther is at least one reported case of a DUKW having a stuck compressor
governor and a bolt instead of a tank safety valve. The resulting hole
(it was afloat at the time) helped it sink (founder?) but fortunately
without fatalities. Told you DUKS were fun, didn't I ? Gordon,
