One problem I can think of is that on the spline end of the axle there are
usually wear areas with a step sometimes. If the axle goes farther in, the step
area will then have a lot of pressure applied to is and may fracture or waer
quickly down to the other level leaving particles inside. You probably should
use the gasket. Have you tried a truck or truck brake place or one of the
vendors like SECO or Memphis?
