I don't know why your tranmission is stuck in low range but I do know
that hi-low shift takes place in the tail cone of the auto
transmission. The transfer case only functions to engage the front axle
when the rear wheels slip (there is no provision for manually engageing
the front end).

You should use 10W non-detergent motor oil for transmission fluid.

If I remember what I have read correctly, shifting is controlled by RPM
and not load. Hilly and level controls shift points. I will try to
check the manual for more details.
