Auke,

A couple of weeks ago you asked Gordon about a rear brake line modification
kit for a DUKW. Did you get an answer?

I happened to be reading and reading and reading my DUKW manuals which have
recently arrived and saw a reference to a brake modification kit. It's in the
DUKW Operational Procedures Manual,(Protrayal Press #620-DUKW.US Army Pacific
WW2), ISBN # 0-938242-14-8, 104 pages. Page 10, paragraph 34 talks about Rear
Axle Brake Hose Connectors. Among other things it says " All earlier vehicles
fitted with the original type of exposed rubber hose leading to each rear
brake will be modified as shown in TB 9-802-FEl. Necessary details can be
procured under MWO G-508 W-l, from the office of the ........"blah, blah,
blah. Don't know if this means anything at all, just thought I'd pass it
along.

My DUKW arrived at my house Saturday morning, safe and sound. Since it was
produced in December of 1944, it may have the later style of rear brake hoses
on it. (sorry, haven't checked yet) I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time
under it in the near future: let me know if you need me to look at something
for reference purposes.

And a question for the DUKWxperts. I was examining a couple of different
DUKW's this afternoon (not for sale) and they all had a large, bellows type,
hand operated bilge pump installed directly behind the drivers seat mounted
through the aisleway grating. The pump discharged through a third opening in
the side deck, between the two normal bilge pump discharges. There is no
reference to this pump in any of the manuals that I have. Is this something
that was added to DUKW's after WWII when they decided the original hand bilge
pump on the front deck wasn't good enough? Just curious.
