I need some help in figuring out my '53 M38A1, Serial No. 56981. On doing
some research in the manuals I noticed that my engine (no. MD 133504) does
NOT have the hose coming from the valve cover to the oil filler tube. The
valve cover has the boss were the connector should be, but is not cut out
for it. The oil filler tube does have a hose going to the fording valve
attached to the air horn; it has no provision for the valve cover hose. The
oil filler tube has OD paint on it and appears to be orginial to the engine.

I believe that the jeep came from the Marines at Camp Lejune and was
surplused in the mid 70's and used by a civilian employee at the base after
it was sold. The employee must have known the motor pool NCOIC as a number
of M151 parts came with the jeep so if it was a modification, it won't be a
great surprize.

Questions:
1. Is the engine serial no. correct for a M38A1?
2. Is the lack of a hose from the valve cover correct or a non-military
modification?
3. I have a new oil filler tube and valve cover. Will I be removing a rare
set-up by installing the other parts?

Thanks in advance for any help.
