This reply is directed to the Gent who is trying to decide which mule to
keep either the 4 Wheel steer, 4 cyl or the 2WS, 2cyl.

Whether to keep the 4WS (WS=wheel steer) or the 2WS, go for the 4WS most
every time. The turning radius of the 2 wheel steer models are not what
you might expect, that is, it takes a big circle. Keep in mind that the
4WS is selective and can be changed to 2WS by changing a pin. To my
limited knowledge, I do not believe the 2WS can be changed without a lot
of work to 4WS.
The choice of 4cyl versus 2cyl is harder to decide. The 2cyl engines are
cheaper, easier to work on, found on the 5KW gen.series but only develop
14 HP. The 4cyl engines made by Willys are an interesting breed. The
cylinders and 'block' are cast as one piece. They are NOT like a VW
engine.
I have the M274 with 4WS and 4cyl Willys engine. I had to buy a new
magneto ($65), a new carb ($25) and new plugs and wiring. It runs great
with 18 HP (I think these figures are correct, I can check the manuals if
you really want more info).
It is possible to put a 2 cyl in the early Willys 4WS. Just add money and
work. The kit is $300 + 2 cyl engine + electric start--------
Supplies are plentiful as is help from the Mule Page, Uncle Al, and parts
from Leonard Grove, Bill Watson, Robert Froehlich and others.
My advice is try to keep both of them. The price on mules seems to be
going up. I would agree with Mark and keep the 4WS steer one. You can
always convert to 2 cyl later if you must (I'll be glad to buy your old
4cyl motor.)
By the way, a mule will fit into the bed of a full size pickup.
Whatever you do, have fun. Good luck, keep in touch. Mark and I have just
bought Mules over the last 6 months, so we can all learn together.
