Would you put a cheesey plastic band on a Rolex as well? It has always been
my impression that the aftermarket body tubs available are so substandard in
appearance and dimensional accuracy that they are next to worthless. This is
mentioned aside from the fact that any incorrect body tub would significantly
reduce the historical and monetary value of you vehicle once completed. If I
were in your position would exhaust every lead to an original tub before I
would settle for a re-pop body. Actually, I would use the Willys MB tub that
you already possess before I would consider an aftermarket even if the MB tub
needed repair. If you want to restore a WWII jeep then use as much proper
stuff as you can, if you want a "jeep salad" then any old body will do. In
fact, I will bet that a little patience and perserverance in a search for a
proper tub will pay untold dividends some day.
You could probably find a saveable original tub for the same or nearly equal
cost.
Come on list, lets help this fella out! Anybody got a 43 GPW tub they can
bear to part with?
By the way, Rick, are you SURE that your GPW is a 43? Could it maybe be an
incorrectly titled 44? This would explain the presence of an MB style tub as
the 44s and 45s from both manufacturers used the same body tub with minor
detail differences. What is your GPW's serial # and where did you find this
number? This will determine a lot of very inportant info about your jeep.
