[MV] RE DUKW seals etc

-Are these the seals which (in the manual) appear to be part of the outer
-bearing retaining nut on the rear axles?

No they are separate and oderable as such. Remember that they were an after
thought and work accordingly. When installing and adjusting the bearings, check
how much pressure that you must apply to the axle flange to compress the seal.
If it takes a lot to seat the axle flange to the hub, the seal will not last.

-So the NOS wheel hub and inner axle seals on a DUKW are the same type as used
-on the CCKW's and other over-the-road trucks in the 40's? The seal
-construction isn't something "special" just for amphibious beasts?

NO! Both are different. The DUKW seal is a dual lip device and the spindle is
different too

-I assume we're talking about the rear axles here. Does this mean the rear
-axle bearings are lubricated with gear oil from the differential? If this is
-true, what does the seal on the outer wheel bearing retaining nut do?

You can allow the GO to lubricate the bearings in a CCKW. I have done it for
years after pre-lubing the bearings. On a DUKWm the grease helps with water
getting in there. The bearing numbers (CCKW anyways) are the same as my civy
1946 Chev truck that uses GO to lube the rear bearings.

-So, two small lips are better than one big fat one? :)

Usually

-Yeah, I'm still thinking about that one......

One problem with water is that it instantly cools the housing down causing the
pressure inside to drop and possibly sucking in water
