Bruce is correct about the themostat. When coolant is allowed to flow
unchecked trough the cooling system there is not enough time for the
heat transfer to take place at the radiator. As I learned in Physics
classes, we must account for themal lag. That is, put simply, we must
give the heat time to escape from the liquid before it is pumped back
into the block. In past years, while working as an auto mechanic, I have
seen some vehicles that would overheat without a themostat, and others
would never even heat up enough to run the heater. The second case has
potential to cause you problems also.

I'm a new boy, and I don't even have a vehicle yet, but I do have some input to your problem. I would try using a thermostat. I went through the same thing with race cars. Common sense dictates that with no thermostat, coolant could flow even better through the gaping hole in the manifold, unfortunately common sense doesn't apply here. I 've heard lots of theories on this phenomenon but, none that make any sense. If you are determined to not use a thermostat; thermostat substitutes are available from any high performance automotive catalog or store. They resemble big flat washers. I think Moroso makes them. I hope this helps
