Was reading the book, 'The Illustrated Science and Invention Encyclopedia', published by
H.S.Stuttman, Inc. the other day and ran across an interesting note. Under the heading
of Amphibious Vehicles, there was a great pic of DUKWs staging to cross the Rhine. The
text said in part: "Most famous of all amphibians, and still one of the most versatile
vehicles in use, is the American built General Motors Corporation DUKW ('Duplex
Universal Karrier, Wheeled'), first built in 1942 and primarily used for ship-to-shore
transport." --------------DUKW = Duplex Universal Karrier, Wheeled??????

I realized that even after riding in one at the Wisconsin Dells when I was a
wee-bit-of-a-lad, I don't know what DUKW stands for. Is this book correct?? The book
continues with the statement: " 'ducks' are still in use with armed forces all over the
world." This from the International Edition published in 1983.

Is this yet another case of an author not researching his material or what I should ask
is ------ What does DUKW stand for??
