As to why some mail must be opened as a file rather than read within
the mail software, I suspect that it is caused by messages in MIME
format which some mailers cannot interpret. As with the column width
situation, this is a function of the diversity of our mail systems.
Hence my admonition in the Welcome message and periodic informational
postings: do not post MIME messages to the list.
