In a message dated 97-08-27 03:45:39 EDT, you write:

Sounds like you are talking about the early "Script" jeeps. No gas can
bracket and no trailer plug. But both of these items were added at one time
or another . Information was issed how to install the trailer plugs. I'm not
sure about the gas can bracket. That was easy enough to attach where it would
fit. Also, the triangular reinforcement for the rear panel was also added at
a later date. They were sometimes bolted on. I'm not an expert, but I know a
lot of funny things happened in the development of the jeep. I would venture
to say it would be OK to add the gas can bracket if you wanted it, and still
be original to a certain time period, although not factory fresh, and still
be authentic.
