In the six months I've owned my '51 M38, I've found hand signals to work just
fine. On vehicles with no door, it is easy to stick an arm out like a
semaphore. And if driving a military vehicle wasn't enough, I find using
hand signals an additional conversation-starter. Of course, some of the
conversation has been with bozos who tell me that hand signals are "illegal"
Sigh.
