First off, I call them all jeeps, usually. Second, you should have seen
the same thread, albeit about motorcycles, on the Indian mailing list. I
must say that this list is surely only subscribed to by discriminating
gentlemen and ladies.

One more thing about jeeps vs jeeps. I find myself many times having to
explain to the inquiring lay public that there was not one single design of
jeep made and used by the government for over half a century. I answer
this in response to inquiries about jeeps in crates, "Delaware" based
pennies-on-the-dollar surplus jeeps, and more educated questions about
spare parts, engine swaps, etc, etc. So in my little "jeep protocol" in my
head, I have stopped jeep production in 1945. I get myself into this by
trying to explain some jeep history to as many people as possible in the
hope that I will find more people to sell parts and projects to. When you
look at the jeep continuum, from Bantam to MUTT, there really is a great
deal of discernment to be accomplished by the historian and collector. So
cutting off the nomenclature at jeep, MB or GPW +prototypes, and using MC,
M201, M38, M38A1, M151, CJ2A, CJ3, etc, etc for all the "others" has its
practical uses. Sure they are all jeeps, but go ahead and keep using that
term indiscriminately and then try to gently explain to John Public why his
"WWII" jeep is not worth $10,000.00 because it has an M38 air cleaner, T90
transmission, Hurricane engine, M151 wheels, CJ2A body, CJ2A electrical
system...They're all jeep parts, right? Other than that, I'll stand that
there were prototypes, and production models, and after 1945, they were all
copies of a concept with updated technology, and different nomenclature.

And I'll still call them all jeeps, like usual, among the educated. But
with the public, jeeps weren't made after 1945.

Also, in the Baltimore Sun Sunday, M38A1 for sale. I called the owner, and
the jeep came from a fire company. He said that everything was there, and
complete, but the Engine was locked up. He is not a mechanic, so has no
idea what is wrong with the engine. He said however, that it has been
stored indoors for as long as he can remember. The body is in excellent
shape. He wants $2150.00 for it. It sounds like a good project jeep,
although a little on the steep side. I explained to him about the price,
especially with the locked engine. He seemed reasonable. Let me know if
you are interested.
