The reason the -20 and -30 don't discuss tearing the engine down is that
level of maintenance is conducted at the "depot" level. In a line unit
problems of this sort are cured by installing a new engine or shipping the
vehicle back to the depot maintenance people.

That is not to say that intense maintenance was not conducted at the unit
level, it was just never an authorized maintenance activity. In Vietnam, we
often did repairs that were beyond our authorized level in order to keep
sufficent vehicles up to conduct the missions. The same held true for
Germany. A good motor sgt would have a supply of the depot level parts and
manuals to facilitate work on the vehicles when needed.
