I just wanted to add a couple of comments to the compression testing
discussion:

The differential tester mentioned in another message is also known as a
leakdown tester.

Testing is generally supposed to be done with the engine warm. Some
conditions, like cracked blocks, may only be evident when the engine is
warm.

But, I never compression test a hot engine. I just don't like being
burned, and I generally learn what I need to know (usually, that the
problem is elsewhere) from the cold test.
