I have converted MB/GPW jeeps to 12 volts and after researching the
subject I decided to use the resistor. The resistor is called a
"Ballast" resistor and is used to help reduce contact pitting by
reducing the current flow through the points at low engine rpm. The
ignition system is also protected if the ignition is on, but not
running, and the points happen to be closed. In order to provide a
hotter spark for starting the ballast resistor is switched out of the
circuit. Ford accomplishes all this using a ceramic resistor and a set
of switches on the starter relay. Other manufacturers use the ignition
switch and resistance wire. On the vehicles I've converted I used the
=46ord system with parts acquired from the local "auto recyclers". You
don't need to change the coil as essentially you are running on 6
volts and only using 12 volts for a short time when starting.
Just my opinion,
Buzz
