Hi Rob,
We also have one of these 441-XXXXXX motors and Todd Paisley said it came
out of a 1941 Willy's Americar.
Your theory on commandeered supplies sounds plausible because of the
problems getting Ford up and running with all Ford parts. Their use of Willys
style frames is a good example. If they had a problem develop with their
castings or something and production was slipping they certainly would have
used whatever they could get to keep going.
The other option you presented of rebuilt civilian Go-Devils supplied as
replacements also has great merit. If the factory was at capacity with
regular production then another company salvaging engines from civilian cars
for a spares contract would be plausible.
Curious to me is that we also got our engine with a '42 GPW (10-6-42 to be
exact). The frame and data plates match on this one and we thought the engine
was just a standard post war CJ conversion job (it has a CJ head). Ford
stamped their Willys frames but if they had to use these engines for a short
time and the regular area was already stamped did they just not bother?
Another thought for this: If the pratice of F marking so others would know it
was Ford made; then would this be an instance where it wasn't Ford made and
they didn't want to mark it and be associated with another company's work and
any problems that might result? Many questions and possibilities here;
anybody have answers or more questions? Also appreciative of more info on
this.
