There are a number of dodges around the CDL issue in most states, farm
vehicles etc... When I registered my old M-37 in California it fell into
the commercial vehicle catagory. Here they want a scale certificate and
your fees are based on the light weight of the vehicle.
If you put 5 tons highway weight on a deuce it can fall into the class B
CDL catagory. A 5 ton cargo will make the class A specs if you are towing a
loaded trailer. I guess the rule of thumb is to do your research for your
area of operation and , know the laws that apply to you.
