Mick,

Keep your hand-crank behind the rear seat, and get your buddies to help
you roll start the vehicle (or better yet, fix the starter). If the
engine backfires while trying to start the vehicle, the crank will pull
out of your hand and come around and break your arm. This happened to
an uncle of mine.

It ain't worth it.

I have hand-cranked my jeep quite often. In the winter, when the cold
reduces the battery efficency and the oil is very viscous, the starter
is quite slow.
But after a few turns on the hand-crank, it is very willing to start.

Yes.

Hold the crank like that, turn slowly until you get to the compression
stroke with the
handle on the crank turning up, and then put your weight on the crank,
turning the motor quickly. Do not try to continuosly turn the crank
fast, as this only tires you out.
As soon as the motor fires up, get to the throttle and choke controls to
adjust them.
