[MV] Transfer Case Woes

Greetings to the list! I have a '42' GPW ( # 64669) that I've been
working on and I've found that the transfer case leaks lube through front
side where the intermediate gear shaft passes through housing. It does
this only while moving. There is some play front to back as well, most
likely because the lock plate on the back is quite a bit thinner than the
groove in the shaft. I assume all this means a worn shaft that needs
replacing , so here are my questions. Can the assembly ( gear, bearings,
thrust washers etc) be removed through the bottom transfer case cover
without disrupting anything else? I assume the shaft itself would be
driven out towards the back of the case. Also, is it possible that the
case itself is excessively worn? Any ideas or any one with a similar
experience? Thanks in advance for your help.
