The Rubicon is a "jeep" trail from Georgetown, California to Lake Tahoe via
an area known as the Devil's Playground. The trail is approximately 35
miles long and requires 4 w.d. low range for much of the distance. The
trail is most noted as the original site of the "Jeepers Jamboree" founded
by Mark Smith. The Jamboree occurs over a two day period with a big party
after the first day. For the evening's entertainment, a grand piano is
helicoptered in to the camping area (at least it was on the last two times
I participated). The "trail" involves some bolder hopping and travels
through part of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The most challenging
part of the trail leads down a dried out waterfall known as the Sluice
Box(sluice box was a gold miners invention to redirect water flow from a
river through a series of channels to sort out gold).

The original trail was cut through some bolders and was exactly two inches
wider than a CJ 3B(one inch for either side). The trail now bypasses those
narrow cuts. The Jamboree was only open to CJ/MB class Jeeps and Toyota
Land Cruisers, although any vehicle is welcome to try during non-Jamboree
times. Participation in the Jamboree is drawn by lottery and for lottery
information, write to Mark Smith, Jeepers Jamboree, Georgetown, Ca. 95634.

Although many of the vehicles are modified I have seen stock MB, M38,
M38-A1 military vehicles cross the trail and I have done it in essentially
an stock CJ 5, CJ 7 and a Jeepster Commando(raised about two inches). Long
wheelbase vehicles are not recommended due to the many tight switchbacks.
If I can get access to a scanner, I will send you some pictures.
