Brian,
The Hercules is a rather common engine from that period. The JX series of
engines sometimes used the Carter carbeuretor, but not always. The JXD
engine (6 cylinder) powered the M3 and M20/M8 series of armored cars. I
believe that engine had a Zenith Model 29 carb. Is that engine a four
cylinder? If it is, it could have been powered by a Schebeler, Zenith, or
Carter carbeuretor. I have seen all three on different versions of the
four cylinder.
