Just thought I'd chime in on this one, because my findings were a little
different: Both GPW's I have had the following items in black: starter,
generator, oil filter, oil filter bracket, crossover tube,
carburetor horn, distributor,
radiator, and dipstick tube. This differs slightly from previous posts.
The fan was rusted to the point that no paint remained, but the others -
including the dipstick tube had black under several layers of badly
applied OD, then red, or some strange blue (depending on which of the two
jeeps it was). The fuel strainer mounted to
the passenger side firewall was OD. Both GPW's are April '43, DOD was
only one day apart (15th & 16th).

The bottom line is this: it seems Ford used several different painting
schemes in the engine compartment. Maybe this is dependent on the date of
mfg, or possibly assembly plant.

That's my $.02
