[MV] Flat fender winches and holes

Hey all,

Every once-in-a-while I see a MB or M38 offered with an "original" military
winch or capstan. Any idea how many jeeps were fitted with these things
(either a number or a percentage of total production)? As for the MB, was
this an early or late production accessory or were they fitted throughout
the war? Powered off the engine crank I assume.

Also, some years ago I had a GPW with a hole between the seats that looked
like it was made to run belts through the floor from the xfer case to power
a generator or something. Was that what the hole was for? Mine had a nice
(factory?) cover for the access hole. How many GPWs had this hole and what
was it used for?

I guess you can tell from the questions I'm not a "Jeep guy". Just
curious.

Thanks,
Bob
