And therein is the other side of the coin, Doug. Which do you mean, the M2
or the M3? M3A1? A2?
How about that Patton tank? M47? M48? M60? A1? A2? A3?
You're entirely right that "M3" can mean lots of things, but the actual
designation of, say, "M3A1 Halftrack Personnel Carrier" is easier to
understand. Of course, most people don't use the whole thing, but if your
Plt Sgt says, "Drive that M3 over the ridge," he probably doesn't mean the
submachine gun. If he's pointing at a vehicle park that includes both
halftracks and tanks, he'll probably say, "Drive that halftrack over the ridge."
And, really, if you stand there asking him which one, he's going to point at
the particular one and say, THAT ^*&%^@%*%&%!^% halftrack!" ;-)
