Regardless of any color coding standards (or lack thereof), colors are
NOT a reliable means of identifying the bottle contents. A bottle can be
sprayed the wrong color quite easily, and it probably happens quite
often.

A more reliable approach is the fitting type. The CGA (Compressed Gas
Association) has devised a standard for fitting types to be used on
bottles for different contents. The use of left-hand vs. right-hand
threads, or internal vs. external threads, etc. is a much more reliable
approach to avoiding the use of the wrong gas. While not absolutely
foolproof, it certainly is a better approach than color coding by
itself. Naturally, it would be good to use both.

Permanent labeling (stamped into bottles) is also more reliable than
colors.

Alan
