Stars were for recognition, when you got a little nervous you
stencilled a star in a circle, the stencil giving the broken circle
effect, then the next time you painted it you just brushed over the
whole circle. In Europe vehicles started off with very small insignia
and stars, but as 'friendly' incidents increased more and more white
paint was added to try and stop you getting hassle from your own side.
The balck and white 'invasion stripes' seen on aircraft after d-day
were the same idea.

I remember being told that as many (more?) people were killedand
injured by being run down in blackout conditions as were killed by
enemy bombing in the biltz on London. Bumper and fender edges plus
star size all came in for some extra paint, as did Red Cross insignia
on many Ambulances. Gordon.
