Hi all,
I've got a few questions that some of you (possibly Jim or Joe) could
answer. I've been looking for a 5 ton 6x6 for about 6 months now (just
the looking stage so far) and am about ready to purchase one but I
haven't decided on a model yet. I was interested in the M939 series
until recently when I found out they go for $35-45k (I was willing to
pay in 20-25 range but that's out of my budget). Anyway, this is what
I'm interested in, any advice you have is appreciated. I want to
convert the 6x6 into a camper/tow vehicle for my four wheel drives. I
want to get about 9mpg and would like an auto (I dont drive big truck
enough to shift smoothly all the time). I know that the earlier models
came with manuals and diesels that got about 5mpg or gas at 4mpg but
would be willing to change over to a cummins big cam and an allison
6-speed if the price was right. I think my best route given that I'll
end up swapping drivetrains anyway is to pick up a M54 series
(expansible van body style). How's that sound to you folks? Also I
haven't found any information about the M809 series, how do these differ
from the 54's and 939's? Would they be a better choice than the M54?
I'd also consider converting to Super-Singles, what are the advantages
to the Super-Single axles as opposed to the duals? Has anyone done the
swap? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
