Norton and Rockwell are other commonly used hardness standards, the lab
instruments used to test materials are basically similar in either
dropping a dead hard precision die under a calibrated weight, then
measuring the depth of indentation or by placing an increasing load on a
calibrated die until a standard penetration is reached.

If you look closely on any British wartime or post-war armour, Ferret,
Dingo, etc., you will see a random pattern of marks like someone has
attacked it with a small hand axe in an attempt to make the surface like
checker plate; these are the proofs of correct face hardening.
