The 3F 2708 is the USA number. It is commonly called the hood number.
It is a seperate number for tracking individual vehicles. The Tank and
Automotive command use these numbers to track vehicles rather than
just serial numbers. USA Numbers are grouped according to vehicle
types. Most vehicles will have the number somewhere in addition to the
outside of the hood, especially if the vehicle has been painted the later
camo paintjob which eliminated the hood marked USA number. My
M151A1 had it stencilled under the hood.

In earlier times, Jeeps all began with 20xxxxxx
Big trucks began with 30xxxx
and progressed up to heavier vehicles beginning with 40xxxx for
tracked vehicles (this is off the top of my head, not out the book so my
series numbers may well be off, but you get the idea).

Later M series vehicles had a single digit and letter which identified the
grouping, but the first digit still was a category number. For example,
both my m151A1 and friends M151A1 have original USA numbers which
begin with 2. My is 2G 0685. His is 2M 8023. Since your 5/4Ton begins
with a 3n xxxx, it would stand to reason this was the next catagory. We
have an M725 Ambulance that has a 3n xxxx USA number here in town.
Seems a couple of other M715 with original numbers around here also
have USA beginning with 3 and they all are original numbers.

Hope this helps.

I have a 1967 M715, S/N on the frame is 18684.

On the underside of the hood, are 3" stick-on numbers, centered on the
panel, reading "3F 2708".

What does this number mean?
