[MV] US Army Registration Number/ Serial Number

Hello all. Can I chip in my two-pence worth on the debate about US
Registration numbers?

Over the past year I have been assembling details of M151-series truck data to
try to put together a cross-reference so that someone who knows his MUTT's US
Army registration number could, using the data, determine:-
1. The contractor
2. The contract number
3. The date-of-delivery
4. The serial number

Eventually, the ideal would be to be able to use any one of the four areas to
do a cross-reference. (A long way off).
But there is a lot of misunderstanding as to what the US Army registration
number is, as opposed to the serial number. For the M151-series, this is the
difference:-

The US Army Registration Number.
This is the number stamped into the data plate affixed to the dashboard (on
early M151 trucks-on the transmission tunnel cover). It would appear as
something like "2P 0057". The "2" signifies 1/4-ton truck, the "P" would
change to the next letter of the alphabet when 2P 9999 is reached. The data
plate also gives the model, the Federal Stock Number, the Manufacturer and the
Contract Number. It also gives the date-of-delivery (not always the same as
the date-of-manufacture).

The Serial Number
This is located on a small, rectangular tinplate affixed to the firewall,
positioned midway between the two hood hinges. (On late-model M151A2's, this
plate is located on the transmission tunnel, adjacent to where the driver's
right ankle would be). This plate gives three lots of data:-
First Line says ORD# 8754459. This is the US Ordnance Part No. designation.
Second Line says S/N#53052. This is the serial number (or what we would have
called the "chassis number" if M151 trucks had had a chassis) or to put it
more clearly, this is the body number. This number IS the serial number.
Third line says BUDD. This was the contractor who made the bodies for Ford. I
understand that Fruehauf made them for the Willys/Kaiser/AMC Version of the
Mutt.

I know that TACOM can supply the date-of-delivery of your vehicle if you can
give them the US Army Registation Number (however, some MUTT owners are
understandably reluctant to give this sort of information to TACOM !!!).

My data is being assembled from the information sent to me by helpful
colleagues and acquaintances and from readers of this list...so if you haven't
already done so, please let me have any information you can, or if you know of
someone who has an M151-series truck, ask 'em for me. I don't want to (or need
to) know your (or their) names etc.......just the details. And if I can help
in any way regarding dates/Registrations etc, I'll do my best to help. Just
send me an E-mail to muttguru@aol.com

Kind regards to all, and extra thanks to those of you who have already offered
information.

Ken
