[MV] '42 GPW Clutch

When one steps on the clutch of ones 1942 GPW, the peddle moves a bar,
which moves a cylinder which transfers the movement to a cable which has
a ball on the end which is supposed to activate the clutch. Now, for the
really stupid question: What the heck does the little ball actually do??
is it supposed to be hooked to something? You see, my bar broke and when
I climbed under there, everything was loose. I stuffed the ball back
into the hole but now the thing wont shift gears. Do I need to check out
the pressure plate? If I do, is this an engine out operation? I can't
seem to figure out how to access it. After several weeks of fustration
I've come to realize I don't know what I'm doing. After I get it
accessible, what should I see? Am I screwed? Thanks for your time!
