[MV] Fuel Pump Problem

I have a problem with the fuel pump on my M38A1. It started with me =
finding a crankcase with a lot of gas in it (California additives ate the =
rubber in the pump). I was still able to start it, to move it around the =
yard, out of the way. I went out a couple of days ago to start it again =
and it wouldn't. I replaced the pump and the new one wouldn't pump =
either. I checked the throw on the arm and the dimensions and they were =
the same ( I went with a NAPA aftermarket). As a last resort, I put my =
finger in where the arm goes and manually turned the engine to see if I =
had movement on the lobe. It appeared that it would come up a little bit, =
and maybe fall back before coming all the way up. But it wasn't an =
obvious egg-type shape. It didn't feel like it had a lot of wear on it or =
a groove from the old pump. Should I feel an obvious up and down of about =
the same magnitude as the throw of the pump arm? How is the lobe =
connected in with everything else? Off the cam I imagine, but then why =
does the engine start if I prime the carb, if the cam chain or ? is bad? =
Eventhough the pump is a differential type, I primed it with fuel to see =
if that would help, and it didn't. Any help would be greatly appreciated. =
I imagine that I will have to drop the pan and take a look up there, but =
would like to have some advise as to what I am looking for before I take =
it appart.

Thanks,
Sean
