In 1994, I towed an M151A2 back to England from Belgium, about 400 miles all
told. I used a two-wheel dolly behind my car and put the -A2's front wheels
on the dolly, then strapped 'em down (it probably would have been easier to
put the car on the trailer instead !). I intended to tow the -A2 with the
gears in neutral, but the Belgian INSISTED that I take off the rear propellor
shaft. He warned that if the vehicle should jump into gear, or if the
"orschlen" handbrake should flip on.....I would say goodbye to the car's rear
end. Good advice. But here's some more good advice:-
before removing the rear propshaft, lube both 'U'-joints with grease. That
way, there's a good chance that all the needle rollers wont spill fron the
end-caps of the joints when you take the propshaft off. And tape the end-caps
in place with masking tape for the journey. Or if you want to be even more
prepared, take a small magnet with you, to pick up the needles when they DO
spill out !
