ok, this might clarify things.... or not..
the transfer will lube itself normally if you tow it. it turns the same
way and does not know which way the power is going, from trans to wheels
or from wheels to trans. (that is if you leave it in high range)
but in the trans on the other hand nothing is moving except the
mainshaft which is above the oil level. all the gears will be stationary
on the mainshaft. this might eventually cause a problem. but if you put
the transfer in neutral, the mainshaft will not turn. (putting the trans
in neutral is only an exercise in safety, you might as well leave it in
gear) since the gears in the transfer that are turning are in oil, and
will throw this oil around, all is well. just be sure the transfer oil
level is checked.....
