Thanks very much for the explanation. I had wondered whether a major
blowout in one tyre would cause the others to deflate. If the design was
up to me, I would definitely have the tyres individually plumbed.

The DUKW was fitted with the system for the express purpose of driving
out of the sea, up the beach (wet, then dry sand) and onto metalled roads
without stopping. Obviously, low tyre pressure for the sand, then inflate
to normal operating pressure for the road.

Another contributor to this list suggested that dropping tyre pressure
really didn't make much difference to the traction, and I have always
been concerned that the tube would rotate inside the tyre, or that the
tyre bead would slip off the wheel rim.

(In Iceland, where they run tubeless tyres, if the tyre comes off the
wheel they spray the interior of the tyre liberally with quick-start
alcohol and ignite it! The sudden combustion and expanding hot air
virtually explode the tyre back into place _and_ partially re-inflates
it. Spectacular to watch .. especially when you don't know what's
coming!)
