Mr. Leffler -

We're currently restoring an M35 (2.5T) and repowering an M51 (5T).
My knowledge is limited, but I'll be happy to share what I've seen so
far.

Engines:
We have LDT's made by both White and by Continental. Parts appear
interchangeable; we currently have three torn down. We also have an
LDS427 made by Hercules ('Hypercycle' - doncha love it) No real info
here. It's my understanding that this was produced in relatively
small quantities. Head, fuel, and cooling system components
interchangeable, crank, rods, pistons not. No info on reliability.
Sorry.

Bellhousings:
Our LDT's have a bellhousing with a flat machined face on each side
for an 'L-shaped' motor mount. They also use an adapter ring to mount
the 3053A Dana-Spicer 5spd trans. The flywheel is recessed and mounts
a 12.5" clutch disc (fiber/early or metallic puck/late) and
three-finger pressure plate. These bellhousings can have the starter
mount on either the passenger or driver side and appear to be used
only in the 2.5T trucks. The LDT that came out of our 5T truck uses a
larger diameter bellhousing with the mounts cast integral (no machined
faces). Larger flywheel designed to mount a 15" metallic puck clutch
disc and three-finger pressure plate. Larger, heavier 6352
Dana-Spicer tranny bolts directly to the bellhousing; no adapter.

Transmissions:
The transmissions that we have are the Dana-Spicer 5spd overdrive
type. As mentioned, our deuce uses the smaller 3053A. This looks a
lot like the New Process 465 that you'd find in a 1 ton pickup. The
5T uses a BIG Dana-Spicer 6352. Twice the size and three times the
weight of the 2.5's tranny. (Imagine a deuce tranny on _serious_
steroids!) Appears to have some sort of air shift setup. This
appears to work in conjunction with the transfer case. I'm not sure -
some parts and most of the plumbing are missing. We'll tear into it
tomorrow and see. We also found that the 6352 will bolt directly to
our Cummins 855 NHC. In fact, this is the engine that will go back
into the 5T. YOWZA!! Hope this bit of info helps.
