you may not have to use a spreader, i never have. but use the old shims
at the same location they came out of ( very important ) this will same
you lots of setup time. the same on the pinion shaft, use the old shims
spacers etc. after putting it all togeather check the backlash with a
dial indicator and if it's correct use some red lead to look at the
contact pattern to compare it to pictures of correct pattern as given in
most overhaul books. also engines do not stay clean because of the oil
filter. they stay clean by using detergent oil and changing it at
appropriat intervals
