When I was working as a salvage diver any concretion that was brought up
from the sea was immediately put into a tank of water. If it was too big
for the water tank on the ship, it was taken to shore and transported to
our work area and put in tanks there. Once in the tanks they would do some
kind of electrolysis that would break down the concretion. And you are
right, if it is left out of the water the rust destroys it. If I ever get
to Scotland, I would love to dive on the site.
