Jack

This seems to be a perennial problem on this list. The longer term
members are aware of the fact that not everyone knows what an
Mxx is. You will see that many members list their vehicles at the
bottom of their emails along with a brief description of the vehicle
eg.,

mleaton@netins.net
52 M-37 Dodge 3/4 ton Cargo Truck

(Congratulations to Mike on a good description, I picked his at random.)

I have whinged about this before. The latest mystical posting that
caught my attention is someone mentioning that they transported an
M3 in the back of a pick-up or such?

Very tricky: considering that the designation M3 is usually for:
M3 Stuart light tank
M3 Lee/Grant medium tank
M3 Halftrack
M3 "White Scout Car"
all would be guaranteed to flaten a garden variety pick-up, so I am
still none the wiser as to just what ended up in the back of that
pick-up or whatever it was.

PLEASE EVERYONE, can you NOT assume that the 500 members of this
list, (many non-native English speakers and many, not very familiar with
all the different variants of American vehicles) know just what the heck
you are talking about when you use an "M" number?
Adding the word "truck" or whatever OR/AND year date will make things a
lot
clearer. Chuck Chriss is working on putting together a picture index of
all the different MV's on "Olive Drab" - which could become a
never-to-be
-finished job.

If we really want to cause confusion, us "British Commonwealth"
collectors can revert to FV/MOD numbers and nomenclature instead of
using
the popular names for our vehicles.

eg., The starter carburetter control on the B60 in my FV-700 won't
work!

In popular language, I would have said, 'The choke on the B60 engine
in my Ferret Scout Car won't work' and then gone on to explain that on
these engines the choke actually varies the mixture, and is quite
different in operation to a conventional choke.

Regards
Doug
