The battery clamps on our M35 were pitted and worn. The air gaps
between the clamps and the battery posts caused _serious_ resistance
to current flow during starting. The first notice we had of the problem
was a loud " HISSSSS" and lots of smoke during startup. We shut
down the engine, switched off all electrics, and inspected the batteries
and cables. We found that we had turned one terminal into a lump of
molten lead. Had to replace the battery. Also replaced all clamps!
