I just positively id'ed my fathers motor in his 46 civy Chevy truck
yesterday. Back then there were two engine options, the 216, and 235.
What I found is that the 16 valve cover is held on by two nuts coming up
from the center of the cover, and that the pushrod cover (side cover) has
the spark plugs going thru it. The 235 has the valve cover held on by four
bolts arond the outside lip, and that the pushrod cover ends below where
the spark pulgs go into the head.
Be careful starting it we bent several pushrods and broke a set of rocker
arms trying o start it. The valves in the head had rusted shut after 16
years in storage.
