These new diesel-electric trucks don't work with the old
direct current technology, which the (American) railroad
uses since decades.

The new technology works with three phase alternating
current, whose frequency (=3D revs of the engine/wheels)
can be modified with an electronic device from zero to=20
maximum. This technology is used on all modern German
subways and electric railway locomotives.

There were also test road vehicles: A VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
(RABBIT) and a LEOPARD 1 tank.

The combustion engine drives a three phase alternator.
A rectifier makes dirct current and an electronic device
makes a three phase alternating current with variable
frequency from it. This current drives simple three phase
motors on every wheel.=20

The system works very well, the only disadvantage is the=20
price. It is told that the VW GOLF has cost around DM 1
million. This is nearly ten years ago and electronic=20
equipment became much cheaper during this time. May be
the time has come for the modern version of diesel-
electric drive.

Best regards
Andreas
