[MV] Petrol and Diesel Storage capabilities

Can anyone tell me if Petrol or Diesel has a shelf life ? I have heard that
Diesel can be stored 3 months and petrol about 6 months. Surely this can't
be right ?

Anyone with better or true knowledge please let me know.
