Dont know about the '38, but the MB / GPW experience should be similar.

A Mig welder is the thing for floor replacement, as, working on an
existing shell, you cant really get the spot welder in to the areas needed
very easily. Main problem is for the shell to go out of shape when off
the chassis, so on one of my GPWs the procedure was;

Pull the shell off, strip it, trim rough bits and blast / prime.

Weld up non-critical areas that wouldn't affect the shell alignment,
little slits and tears, etc.

Re-fit the shell to the chassis, fit body bolts (at least six of them) cut
metal required, and tack it in place. The fuel tank well in an MB / GPW
needs particularly carefull positioning and sizing - too small or out of
position and the tank wont go in, too big and the body wont go on the
chassis cause the inside edge of the tank well fouls the chassis.

Pull the body off the chassis again, finish the welding, paint and
underseal before installation.

I reckon a handling jig would just get in the way, you can use the chassis
as the jig, and the body unit can be moved fairly easily by an average
person.
