That's the number of the 16th jeep I have owned, and just picked up today.
I couldn't get it rolling the other day- the rear wheels would turn for
about two feet, and then they would lock up. So I pulled the axles today.
The towing arrangement was interesting. Being short of heavy equipment, I
used my M151A1 and a tow bar configured for the same. I wrapped chain
around the front radiator cross member, and around the tow bar, and then
safetied with two other chains to the rear shackles on the rear of the 151.
I wrapped the safeties around the front spring shackles. Even if not
effective, at least it looked like I had safety chain. So I started up the
road (the jeep was two miles from where I store my newest batch of junk). I
stayed around 15 mpg, in second gear, and made it there without problems,
except irate rush hour people trying to get home. There was a little
property damage. The front portion of the grill was bashed by the tow bar
arrangement. Oh well.
So I looked at it some more. SN 412999 was a US Navy Jeep. The
whole body is mostly an even patina of rust, but lots of gray can be seen on
the combat wheels, and on the underside of the hood. The engine is 546609.
Still has the T-84. The original air cleaner, generator, and voltage
regulator are present. The oil lube chart holder on the underside of the
hood is present, along with a fire extinguisher bracket. Distributor, water
outlet jacket, carbeuretor are gone. Four nice combat wheels, with no
evidence of instruction tags. Gauges are all smashed- probably from the
last resident's kids. The bow brackets are there, the shovel head bracket,
trailer receptacle, and the right taillight also. There is an interesting
cable which comes out from under the center line, goes into steel conduit,
and terminates on a box under the passenger seat- probably for a radio. The
body, of course, is trashed. The side panels might be saved if a
restoration started within a year, but that is a long shot.
I will post photos when I get a chance.
