For the use as you've described, if expense is at all a consideration, I'd
probably go with the deuce. If money is not a signifacant factor, then the 5
ton would be the way to go.
The five ton has greater use in the commercial market, so basically you are
bidding against some one who has the choice of buying the truck you also
want, or buying a $50000.00+ commercial unit. Now, I'm certainly not saying
that surplus 5 tons go that high at auction, but they do go significantly
higher than deuces, and that, I believe, is why.
Yes, the five tons have more power, but you are also moving more iron down
the road. According to my TM 9-2800-1, regarding the gas engine versions,
the deuce w/o winch 12,465lbs and its REO OA 331 has 127 brake hp, while the
5 tons Continental 6602 has 196 brake hp, its weight is up to 19230 lbs. Now,
I haven't put a calculator to this, but I'm betting the horsepower/weight
ratios are similar. The multifuel trucks seem more powerful and are quicker
accelerating, but again I feel certain the hp/weight ratios are similar. The
only exception (you can reasonably expect to buy) to this I can imagine is
the much later versions with the Cummins 250 engine, and I don't have any
data on these trucks to compare.
Power steering on the five ton is a definate plus, although at our rally over
the weekend in a reverse serpintine driving course I did as well with my
deuce as other guys did in their dodge WC-51 and WC62 (The guys with Jeeps
ate our lunch, while interestingly, Brent Sutton won driving, of all things,
a halftrack!)
Another plus (for some of us real strange guys), is that 6602 working at
1300-1400rpm has an unmistakeable POWERFUL sound, kind of says "what part of
the state would you like moved? Beats the whistle of a turbo for sound any
day.
A few facts a lot of opinion that I hope helps, and Good Luck,
David Doyle
