My M38A1 was converted to 12 volts and I converted it back to 24 pretty =
easily. The most expensive things to round up are the gauges and sending =
units. I found an entire M-151 instrument panel for 30 dollars and the =
sending units for 15 a peice. I believe the fuel tank unit was 35. The =
generator and regulator were generously donated from an M-211, as were the =
headlamps. Bulbs for all the rest of the lights were 5 dollars for a box =
of 20. I stocked up on bulbs that day. :-) Overall, I have found it to =
be much more trouble-free than the 12 volt system that was on there =
before. Luckily the person who converted it, took care in not destroying =
mounting brackets and left the same distributor in-place.
Thanks

I am not trying to be a smart-alec but why would you convert
from a very
good 24 volt system to a muchless dependable 12 volt...

In the case of my M38 is was due to a civilian who bought it
cheap and then didn't know where to get 24v. parts so the
easiest thing to do was to convert it to 12v. I have rescued
mine and am converting it back. I think it will be worth it
in the future. I think the military went to 24v. for more
radio power. Between San Jose and this weekend, I have
rounded up all the parts I need to convert. It set me back
about $700.00.
This hobby is so cool I am selling my Mustang !
