You can buy single 24v batteries. The Mil uses them in the US. I had one on
a decontamination pump engine. It was about the same size as an M151
battery, but with 2x as many water caps.

42.5 volts is the safety limit as I recall. The Alternator issue is also
another big loss area. You lose up to.6v per diode in the alternator and
there are two that the voltage must pass thru to get to the battery. Up to
1.2v loss on 12v. Like 10%

If US companies started using 24v, it would become the US standard just like
square headlights became in the 80's.
